Welcome to the official blogsite of Mesa Ranch Performance Horses, owned and operated by Wes and Cindy Smith. Our goal at Mesa Ranch is to raise western sporthorses that have class, savvy, and the capability to rise to the top. Our breeding and training programs are focused in the cutting industry because we know that it all begins with the cow horse. From there, the sky is the limit. Please explore our blog and get a look at our stock.

Dual Nurse: A Legacy in the Making

Originally trained by Loyd Cox and bred by Linda Holmes, Dual Nurse came to the Mesa Ranch showbarn in 1997 as a promising 4-year-old. At the time, Mesa Ranch was based in Nogal, New Mexico, and showing in NCHA circuits meant at least an 8 hour drive into central Texas. Needless to say, "Nursey" proved she was gritty enough to take the physical demands of her sport and then some. (See 'Accolades' on the side bar for a list of Dual Nurses' accomplishments.)

Over her career, Nursey has won over $120,000 and several titles. She has produced 14 foals so far by the top stallions in the cow horse industry (see the Stallion List on this blogsite).

Our operation is characterized by this mare. She is the foundation of our breeding program because she has the looks, the strength and structure, and the mentality that we have always looked for in a cow horse. The greatest thing about her is that she produces this in her offspring. We are convinced that Dual Nurse will leave an unforgettable mark on the performance horse industry, just as she has in our lives.

"A good mare is the key that
unlocks the sire's potential."

Macho Little Lena

Macho Little Lena (by Smart Little Lena) was one of Dual Nurse's best sons. Foaled at Mesa Ranch in 2000, the colt was started by Wes and Cindy and spent his two-year-old year on the ranch. From there, Macho went into Ronnie Rices' training program in preparation for the NCHA Futurity. (See 'Accolades' on the side bar for Macho's Performance Record.)

Macho's LTE was $104,500 and climbing in both the Open Division with Mike Mowery and the Non-Pro with Cindy Smith. But after a serious bout with colic in 2005 and complications from the ensuing surgery, Macho never returned to the show pen. With his health rapidly deteriorating, Macho sired only a handful of foals. He was put down in the fall of 2006. (To read more of Macho's story, see this link: http://misraicesestanaqui.blogspot.com/2008/04/heart-of-lion-part-1.html)

Seven of Macho's sons and daughters, now two-year-olds, are in training at Mesa Ranch. We believed in Macho, and we believe in them, too. (See 'Prospects' above.)
